What is a Breton top and where does it come from?
The Breton top has its roots in the warm sweaters worn by sailors. The term ‘Breton’ literally means ‘from Bretagne’, or Brittany as we know it in English. The northern coast of France, where Brittany is located, is quite chilly, whereas the Riviera region doesn’t require such heavy attire. In the mid-19th century, the Breton became an official uniform for French naval officers and an unofficial one for dockworkers and fishermen along the French coastline.
The traditional Breton features 21 stripes – 11 white stripes 20mm wide and 10 blue stripes 10mm wide. This is why some people still associate the term ‘Breton’ with striped tops featuring alternating wider and narrower stripes.
